2 New Jersey police officers are in stable condition after being shot while serving a search warrant in Newark

A law enforcement source told CBS News that two police officers were shot while attempting to issue warrants in Newark, New Jersey. The source said the shooter fired a rifle from the terrace or window of an apartment complex.

The source said one officer suffered injuries on his neck and the other on his leg. The condition of both the officers is stable at the local hospital.

The suspect is currently surrounded by law enforcement officers in a residential area of ​​Newark. A SWAT team is at the scene and assisting with the FBI investigation.

There is a lockdown in the area.

Shooting took place around 2 p.m. ET in an area about three miles from the center of Newark, CBS New York reports,

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy tweeted That he was aware and was “monitoring” when the incident came to light.

“I am in contact with local authorities and the state is providing resources as requested,” he wrote. “We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure all residents are safe.”
