5 killed in horrific highway accident north of Los Angeles, police say

Five people were killed in a fire early Sunday on a coastal highway north of the Los Angeles area, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the accident occurred at about 4:30 a.m. north of Point Mugu in Ventura County on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).

According to the CHP, one of these vehicles is believed to have crossed the center divider and collided with another vehicle. Both the vehicles came under fire.

The CHP said there were four people in one vehicle and one in the other. All five died. No name was immediately released.

The reason is being investigated.

“At that time in the morning, there is generally little or no traffic in this part of the PCH,” said CHP Sgt. John Larsen told reporters. “There was no significant weather problem. Clearly, one of the drivers was the wrong driver who crossed over and hit the other.”

The CHP said that till Sunday afternoon, the PCH in the accident area remained closed in both directions.
