Eritrean motorcyclist records ‘extraordinary’ first success by African rider in cobbled timeless

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay has become the first male from his country to win among biking’s patched classics by obtaining the distinguished Gent-Wevelgem race on Sunday.

The 21-year-old out-sprinted a team of four cyclists in the last 250 metres to claim the largest victory of his profession.

“I never thought of ending this day with a victory,” Girmay claimed using his Intermarch√©-Wanty-Gobert team after the race.

“It is so challenging to race the Flemish standards without experience.
