Girl killed after truck pulling float during holiday parade in North Carolina

A girl has died after being hit by a truck during a holiday parade in North Carolina, police said. Police said the driver of the truck has been charged with misdemeanor aggravated driving a motor vehicle, reckless and negligent, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 10:14 a.m. local time when the driver of the truck lost control and struck a child participating in the parade at “slow speed.”

“The child was seriously injured. Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, the child succumbed to her injuries,” police said.

Neither the child who was killed nor the driver have been publicly identified.

According to CBS Raleigh affiliate WNCN-TV, a dance school based in Raleigh, CC & Co. Members of the dance complex said their parade float was right in front of the accident. One of the members of the dance school told the outlet that the girl who was killed was a fellow dance member.

Dance Complex said in a statement, “We are still in shock as we write these words to you. We are devastated by the events of this morning. We also know that many of our young people have witnessed this tragedy and It’s hard to even fathom.” posted on facebook.

He added, “We never expected to experience a day like today, and the only thing we are getting from is the tremendous love and support we have expressed among our CC & Co. dance family “

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the young girl who lost her life today at the Raleigh Christmas Parade,” said Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin. Tweeted, “Our prayers are with her family, friends and the dancers at CC & Co. The community is here for you as we try to understand and process this shared tragedy.”

Police said three people were in the truck at the time, and it was also pulling a float with “multiple participants”. Police said no one else was injured during the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and those who witnessed this tragic incident,” police said.

The parade was halted and eventually canceled following the accident.
