Authorities in Florida this week arrested a man for kidnapping and alleging that he allegedly stole a truck with two children. The four and eight-year-olds were safely returned to their father after their arrest.
According to a press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when a deputy was flagged off by the owner of a Chevrolet Silverado at around 6:45 p.m. Monday. The owner said the truck was stolen and that his two young children were inside.
The deputy was able to quickly conduct a traffic stop and pulled over the truck, the release said. Bodycam footage posted to Facebook by the sheriff’s office shows the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Kevin Smith, basically refusing an officer’s orders to hand him the keys and exit the vehicle. Although he eventually complied without incident.
While the arrest was being made, one of the children in the car told the deputy, “It’s not my dad!”
Both the children, who were not injured, were returned safely to their father.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement, “This situation could have been much worse if prompt action had not been taken by Deputy Pazmino Alvarez. He prevented what could have been an otherwise dire situation for any parent.” “Thanks to them, the two children today are safe and in the arms of their loved ones.”
According to the press release, Smith was held without bond. He was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of felony.
