Israeli police said on Friday they put a couple under house arrest, a day after a man attending a party at their villa was sucked into a sinkhole under their swimming pool and died.
Police said the man and the woman, both in their sixties, are suspected to have caused the death by negligence. He was arrested Thursday night and a court on Friday decided to release him for five days under “restrictive conditions of house arrest”.
The incident happened during a private party held at his home in the town of Karmi Yosef, 25 miles southeast of Tel Aviv city.
Mobile phone videos from the scene show people swimming in the center of the pool and water being sucked down, as people sitting by the pool shout in Hebrew. A man is seen approaching the sinkhole, slips and is almost pulled over before retreating.
Police said the 30-year-old was found after a search operation in which Israeli police, emergency teams and the military took part.
Israeli media cited witnesses as saying that the party was attended by about 50 people, six of whom were in the pool, and also reported that the landlord had built the pool without the proper license.
