Michael Avenatti, suspended and jailed attorney who once representedwas sentenced Monday to 14 years in federal prison for defrauding four of his customers of millions of dollars and obstructing the IRS’s efforts to collect payroll taxes from his coffee business.
He must restitution of $10.8 million to his clients and the IRS. US District Judge James V. Selna ordered that the 14-year sentence be applied consecutively to those already serving a total of 5-year sentences.
Avenatti is currently serving time in a Southern California prison afterFrom Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress he represented in her legal battle with former President Donald Trump. Avenatti was also convicted for ,
Avenatti’s latest conviction comes after pleading guilty in June to tax-related charges and four counts of wire fraud. At the time, he said he wanted to spare his family any additional embarrassment.
In sentencing Monday, the judge said Avenatti had “committed a great evil for which he must answer.” Prosecutors noted that one of the customers Avenatti had stolen from was a paralyzed man with mental health issues. The Justice Department says Avenatti represented the man,in a lawsuit against Los Angeles County, but did not tell Johnson about the $4 million settlement and used the money for himself.
“Michael Avenatti was a corrupt attorney who claimed he was fighting for the little guy,” US Attorney Martin Estrada said in a statement. “In reality, he only cared about his own self-interests. He stole millions of dollars from his clients – all to finance his extravagant lifestyle that included a private jet and race cars. As a result of his illegal acts, he He has lost his right to practice law in California, and now he will serve a massive prison sentence.”
