Will agent Torres survive in the new season or not? Here’s everything we know so far.
As many fans noted throughout the season, Agent Torres’ story can be tricky and shifting, and he’s had some particularly rough seasons. Earlier, midway through season 18, his long-lost and supposedly dead father reappeared, only to abandon him once again.
Also, Ellie Bishop, his love interest, quit. NCIS at the end of season 18 to become a spy. So Gibbs’ decision to leave NCIS pushed Torres into a spiral for much of season 19, as Torres regarded Gibbs as a mentor figure, despite Alden Parker being an excellent replacement. We know that Torres is still in therapy with Dr. Grace Confalone and is not drinking.
But fans have seen him change in a few episodes, showing that the bad news might be lingering as he’s taking too long to take essential action and react the way he used to in serious scenarios. We know that Torres struggled last season, coupled with the fact that Valderrama was working on numerous projects, which has led to some NCIS fans believe he could be killed before season 20.
NCIS Executive producer Steven D. Binder confirmed that Agent Torres would have a rough Season 20, and the third episode, “Unearth,” is where his rough patch begins. The official synopsis for the episode reads: “A murder investigation features NCIS to a long-standing curse that ultimately puts Torres and Dr. Grace Confalone in a tough spot.”
It is also mentioned that as Torres continues therapy with Dr. Grace, she discovers that their lives are in danger. This led viewers to once again speculate that Torres could die or something bad happen to him. Also, Torres chose to be more open with his friends after he finished “Unearth” because he was tired of being the lone wolf. But that doesn’t mean much will change.
Furthermore, in previous reports, back in May, NCIS executive producer Steven D. Binder said TV line that “he has these internal pressures building up inside of him, and at some point, you explode, and I think that’s in his future.” Later in the interview, he said, “I think we’ll get pretty dark with [Torres]but we try to do it in a way that doesn’t destroy what we love about the character.”
While Torres appears to be on the mend, things are about to get worse for him in the near future. The only problem is if he will come out of his difficulties stronger or if he will be discarded with his possible love interest to fit in with Valderrama’s other projects. While the character hasn’t been killed yet, he is still an option.
