The 82-year-old monarch, who celebrated half a century on the throne earlier this year, announced last Thursday that the children of her youngest son, Prince Joachim, would no longer be known as prince and princess from next year.

“In recent days there has been a strong reaction to my decision on the future use of the titles of Prince Joachim’s four children. It certainly affects me,” the monarch said in the statement.

It’s my duty and desire as Queen to make sure the monarchy always keeps up with the times. Sometimes that means tough decisions have to be made, and it’s always going to be difficult to find the right time,” he said.

The Queen said she made “adjustments” to allow the younger royals to lead more normal lives, while following a similar decision by other royal families to reduce the monarchy.

“Having a royal title implies a series of commitments and duties that, in the future, will fall to lesser members of the royal family,” he said.

Crown Prince Frederick, the Queen’s eldest son, is first in line to the throne. His eldest son, Prince Christian, is second in line to the throne. All four of Frederick’s children retain their titles.

His younger brother, Joachim, lives in Paris with his wife, Princess Maria, and their two children, Heinrich, 13, and Athena, 10.
