Twitter’s new owner and CEO, billionaire Elon Musk, said on Friday that he was not involved in lifting the ban on Kanye West’s Twitter account. The rapper, who now performs under the name Yeh, wasof the account earlier this month for making anti-Semitic statements on the platform.
Tesla-founder, JoeThe social media network tweeted on Friday that the company would form a “content moderation council with broadly diverse perspectives” after it bought it for $44 billion earlier this week.
“There will be no major material decision or account restoration before that council convenes,” Musk said.
In response to that statement, a Twitter user asked from moscow Why the read-only ban was reportedly lifted from West’s account. Musk responded that West’s “account was reinstated by Twitter prior to the acquisition. He did not consult or inform me.”
West has not tweeted from the account since October 8, and CBS News has not independently verified whether West’s access has indeed been restored.
Twitter kicked West off the platform “due to a violation of Twitter’s policies” from his account.CBS News in a statement on October 9. When a Twitter account is classified as “read-only,” it means the user is prohibited from tweeting, retweeting, and liking content, the platform’s website says. The user can still read his timeline and send direct messages to his followers.
“The duration of this enforcement action may range from 12 hours to 7 days depending on the nature of the violation,” the site also reads.
In the wake of his statements, West was also banned on Instagram after posting screenshots of an alleged conversation with rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs in which West suggested that Combs was being controlled by Jews. However, his Instagram account resumed posting on Wednesday.
