Representative Karen Bass projected to win Los Angeles mayoral race

Democratic Rep. Karen Bass has defeated billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso to win the race for Los Angeles mayor, CBS News reported Wednesday, making her the first female elected mayor in LA city history.

Bass was leading over Caruso by more than 46,000 votes, or just over 6 percentage points, with 74% of the precinct reporting. The results are slowly trickling in for days. Caruso took an early lead of 12,000 votes. Bass pulled away from it before taking a wide lead over the last several days.

In a statement Wednesday night, Caruso acknowledged that he “came up short in the count.”

And later, Bass revealed in his own statement that he had received a “gracious call” from Caruso, and that he is “somebody who I hope will continue his civic involvement in the city.”

“On the first day, if I have had the privilege and honor of being elected mayor, there is no question, the declaration of emergency is being made to address the people on our streets that day,” she told CBS Los Angeles In an interview last month.

Bass will replace outgoing LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, who has served as mayor since 2013 but cannot run again due to term limits.
