Democratic Rep. Karen Bass has defeated billionaire real estate developer Rick Caruso to win the race for Los Angeles mayor, CBS News reported Wednesday, making her the first female elected mayor in LA city history.
Bass was leading over Caruso by more than 46,000 votes, or just over 6 percentage points, with 74% of the precinct reporting. The results are slowly trickling in for days. Caruso took an early lead of 12,000 votes. Bass pulled away from it before taking a wide lead over the last several days.
In a statement Wednesday night, Caruso acknowledged that he “came up short in the count.”
And later, Bass revealed in his own statement that he had received a “gracious call” from Caruso, and that he is “somebody who I hope will continue his civic involvement in the city.”
A Republican-turned-Democrat, according to the Los Angeles Times, spent more than $100 million on his campaign, most of it his own money.
