Soldier killed in shootout at Fort Stewart, Georgia; suspect in custody

A soldier was killed and a suspect is in custody in Monday’s shooting at Fort Stewart, Georgia, an official said.

According to a statement from spokesman Kevin Larsen, law enforcement was dispatched to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team compound on the military base, which is located near downtown Hinesville, for a possible shooting just before 10 a.m. The same information was shared on Fort Stewart. social media,

Larsen said the complex had been closed for some time.

The identity of the soldier will be released after his next of kin are informed.

The accused was arrested on the spot. The suspect was not immediately identified and Larson said there is no active threat to the community.

The suspect was transferred to the custody of the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
