Virginia Congressman Donald McEachin has died at the age of 61

Congressman Donald McEachin, who represented Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, has died, according to a statement from his office. He was 61 years old.

“We are all devastated by the passing of our boss and friend, Congressman Donald McEachin,” the representative’s chief of staff, Tara Rowntree, said in a statement. “Bravely, for years now, we have watched him fight and win over the secondary effects of his colorectal cancer since 2013. Tonight, he lost that battle, and the people of Virginia’s 4th Congressional District lost a hero who will always Fight for them. And put them first.”

Rowntree said the late Congress leader’s office would remain open until a new representative was elected.

McEachin was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2016. He had won the November midterm elections just weeks before his death.

McEachin previously served in the Virginia Senate from 2008 to 2017 and twice from 1996 to 2002 and again in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006 to 2008.

Senator Mark Warner of Virginia said in a statement that “to the very end, Don was a fighter. Even though he battled cancer and faced other trials in recent years, he never wavered in his focus on social and environmental justice.” Lost. Tonight, Virginia lost a great leader and I lost a great friend.”
