The Waukesha Christmas Parade made its triumphant return a year after a driver turned into an incident that killed six people and injured dozens more.
The theme for the 2022 parade was “Peace on Earth.”
The event included 80 groups marching through a new route through downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin, as memories of last year’s tragedy were still fresh in residents’ minds.
Leading the parade was the first responder, who served as grand marshal and was greeted by loud cheers from the audience.
They first appeared on the scene last year when 40-year-old Darrell Brooks Jr.Through the parade, according to prosecutors, after a feud with his ex-girlfriend. Six people died, including an 8-year-old boy who was marching with his baseball team as well as three members of a group. , Hundreds of others were injured.
Dancing Grannies, arguably the highlight of the parade, followed behind first responders dressed in blue and white getups as they danced to “Jingle Bell Rocks”. Family members accompanied the group carrying photographs of those lost last year.
Also in attendance were Waukesha Mayor Sean Reilly, members of the Waukesha West Band, who performed for the cheering crowd, and Santa and Mrs. Claus, who greeted onlookers as they made their way down the parade route.
